You have to first decide whether you will go for teaching profession or not.
For Teaching Profession
Senior Resident / Tutor / Demonstrator / Registrar -> Assistant Profession (Lecturer) -> Associate Professor (Reader) -> Professor
Check the recent guidelines of MCI (Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Institutions Regulations).
Super Speciality / Fellowship
Only DNB (Gen Surg) degree is not sufficient if you are planning to settle in metro city. In near future same situation will be seen in towns. There is a tough competition among surgeons.
- If you want to continue as General Surgeon, get some fellowship degrees (FMAS, FNB (MAS), FIAGES, FICLS etc) or write MRCS.
- If you want to do super specialty prefer MCh > DNB Super Specialty > Fellowship
Fellowship in Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery, Transplantation Surgery are becoming popular.
There are four types of surgeons…
- Good Teacher + Good Practitioner
- Good Teacher + Poor Practitioner
- Poor Teacher + Good Practitioner
- Poor Teacher + Poor Practitioner
It is very hard to be number 1 type. Number 2 or 3 type should be the target. Never be number 4 type.
All the best.

You’ll not be medico legally protected if you practice individually without proper degree certificate. You can do practice with other senior surgeons. All the best for future.
